HBCU Heroes Launches Financial Literacy Tour and Partnerships at HBCUs

Atlanta, GA, United States, 26th Feb 2023 – HBCU Heroes, a non-profit organization that connects corporate America to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for recruitment, is celebrating Black History Month initiatives to support generational wealth by launching the Secure the Bag Financial Literacy Tour & Career Fair Series. The hybrid tour creates interactive experiences, such as financial literacy workshops and leadership panels with C-suite executives both on-campus and through virtual webinars. On February 23rd, the tour begins in-person at Florida A&M University and will be simultaneously virtual. The Zoom event begins at 9:20am EST and will feature workshops, fin-lit panels, and more. Registration for the virtual webinar is free and open to the public at www.hbcuheroes.org/secure-the-bag-tour.

The tour will continue throughout 2023 as a hybrid series across HBCU campuses, both in-person and virtually via Zoom. Partial list of celebrity and athlete speakers include: DL Hughley (Comedian/best-selling author), Vin Rock (Naughty By Nature/tech entrepreneur), Isaac Keys (Actor/Power Book IV), Tameka Foster Raymond (Entrepreneur/Influencer/Author), George Lynch (Co-founder/HBCU Heroes/NBA veteran, TV Analyst), Alge Crumpler (NFL Veteran) and more.

A partnership with Athletes for Hope will assist HBCU Heroes by connecting professional, Olympic and Paralympic athletes as speakers throughout the tour. AFH educates, encourages, and empowers athletes to find their passion. AFH athletes will speak on topics for the tour such as: overcoming adversity, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and more.

Upcoming spring and fall tour stops include:

Grambling State University, Tennessee State University, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, Florida Memorial University, and more.

During the Black History Month launch, Aflac representatives will address the FAMU School of Business and Industry (SBI). The Aflac partnership is part financial, part volunteer-employee based, and part social impact. Throughout 2023, Aflac representatives will participate from keynote speakers to recruiters. Aflac’s support also includes activations and leadership panels both on-campus or a virtual presence.

“Our plan is to share our entrepreneurial stories of how we were able to create generational wealth for our families as well as what it takes to lead at the executive level,” said Todd V. Mason, Business Council Member/Creator of Executive Opportunities Bouvier and Victor, LLC (Consultant for Aflac).

“HBCU graduates bring a multitude of talents to America’s workplace,” said FAMU President Larry Robinson, Ph.D. “At a time when many employers are struggling to fill vacancies, the tour provides a great opportunity for employers to explore and ultimately utilize the tremendous skill sets of our students and alumni.”

The tour includes subject matter experts such as Heyward Damon (Board Chairman/HBCU Week Foundation, Inc.), Ray Leonard, Jr. (Ovationz), Tanesha Boldin (Critical Access Network), Jahliel Thurman (Yard Talk 101), Tracey Pennywell (Co-founder/HBCU Heroes), Lindsay LaBennett (AVP, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion/Wasserman), Keshia Walker (Insights Marketing), Chris Corinthian (Financial Literacy Expert), Rachel Maeng Brown (Influencer Manager & NIL Expert), Terry L. Cyrus (Outspoken Media) and more.

Workshops also include an exploration of documentary filmmaking with directors Deborah Hoard and Ry Ferro of MOVE WHEN THE SPIRIT SAYS MOVE: THE LEGACY OF DOROTHY FOREMAN COTTON.

On February 7th, HBCU Heroes facilitated students from Florida Memorial University (FMU) to participate in Danaher Corporation’s annual global leadership conference via a partnership with visit.org. Students engaged in small-group, roundtable conversations and gained valuable insight and tangible nuggets on how to land the right job, build a network, and launch a career.

“I could not be prouder of the Danaher Leaders and the FMU team who participated in our Career Mentorship Event,” said Nicole Wormley, VP, and Chief Diversity, Equity + Inclusion Officer at Danaher Corporation. “The engagement, active participation and dialogue on both sides was amazing to witness. Leaders were transparent, honest, and vulnerable as they shared best practices and learnings over the course of their career. Students actively engaged in dialogue, asking great questions, and taking notes along the way from Danaher’s top 190 leaders in the world. We could not have done this without the partnership and support of HBCU Heroes, Visit.org, Dr. Jaffus Hardrick and the team at FMU.”

Danaher provided grants to FMU and HBCU Heroes.

In a continued effort to support HBCU scholars, HBCU Heroes is also partnering with Harris Teeter and P&G throughout February during Black History Month. History-makers from the HBCU community will be featured across in-store and digital displays to celebrate their contributions. “We are committed to creating better lives for our consumers, and Harris Teeter is dedicated to supporting their communities,” said Jeff Havermann at P&G.
