Health insurance in Arlington Faces Positive Changes During Medicaid Expansion

Health insurance in Arlington could also receive a significant expansion should a new Medicaid expansion bill continue its surge through the various stages of government approval. Per several reports, House Bill 76 could create a pathway for thousands of low-income workers who still earn too much from their jobs to qualify for the program as it is currently structured. The program as is keeps affordable health care out of reach because these same workers do not quality for subsidies available through the federal health insurance online marketplace. Currently, Texas is one of 12 states that has yet to adopt an expansion to cover this left-out class of workers.

Texas is not alone. Included in the list of 12 states that have yet to adopt an expansion include North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The current bill is specific to North Carolina for now, but the hope is that if it passes, other states like Texas will soften on their hard stance against it. If Texas decides to adopt expansion, it would benefit those without Arlington health insurance. The current bill has already passed through the House of Representatives but still needs to sway detractors in the Senate before it is officially passed and signed into law.

Rick Thornton, an Arlington health insurance agent, said the biggest difference with the latest rendition of the bill is that there is no proposed work requirement for new program beneficiaries. When Medicaid was created in 1965, it was considered open to every who falls in the coverage category. Advocates say most people who would benefit from the expansion are already working; this includes farmers, childcare workers, and others with lower wages in jobs that don’t provide health benefits as the primary beneficiaries.
