Nigel Lo wins Aussie Award for Leadership & Teamwork

KUCHING: 9 Feb 2012 – Sarawakian Nigel Lo is the first Malaysian to win the Long Tan Leadership & Teamwork Award from the Australian Defence Force.

It is for outstanding dedication and leadership to inspiring peer encouragement and learning through the Murdoch College Magis Society in Perth, Australia.

The 19 year old student received a cash prize of AUD$500 besides the award which recognises students who demonstrated leadership and teamwork within the school and community.

“The Magis Society is a school run club which aims to get students to inspire and help one another excel in all areas of life” Lo explained, adding that the word ‘Magis’ meant to ‘seek more’ in Latin.

According to him, the club gave students and the opportunity to seek more and learn from each other.

Through the Magis Society Lo co-wrote the manual called ‘The Legacy Project’ to help club members change their own lives as well as the lives of those around them.

Formed in February 2010, the club has a global network of 145 members operating from countries like Australia, United States, Singapore and Malaysia. Currently in Kuching for the holidays, Lo is pursuing a law degree at Murdoch University in Perth, will be conducting a motivational youth talk at Masterskills College Kuching tomorrow Feb 10.

Two years later, one of the members of the Magis Society – Darence Ki’s Recyclecity project was launched with the aim to inspire and teach young people to practise good recycling habits by collecting and selling recycled items and using the proceeds to sponsor children in poverty ridden countries like Africa.

According to a press release yesterday, the Form 2 student was one of a cohort of students from Lodge School attending a workshop entitled ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ delivered by the International Magis Society (IMS) chairman Nigel Lo and director of the Western Australia Socio Economic Foundation (Wasef), Mathias Morgan.
