McShin Foundation, Home for Supported Sober Living & Addiction Recovery

The McShin Foundation provides persons and families with the resources and tools they need to fight against substance use disorders.

Mcshin Foundation helps individuals maintain sobriety and recover from drugs or alcohol addiction. The center is a leading non-profit and full-service Recovery Community Organization (RCO) that provides persons and families with the resources and tools they need to fight against substance use disorders. They do this by helping participants create positive lifestyles, access recovery education, and safe, affordable living spaces. Their service portfolio includes sober living in recovery houses and a 28-day recovery program and referral system working with leading physicians in drug and alcohol detox.

This center has Level-One and Level-Two recovery residences for individuals seeking aftercare from treatment centers. The sober living houses provide residents with safe and affordable housing, certified by the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences (VARR) and the National Alliance for Recovery Residences. Residents can access the center, activities, structure, and accountability system. They also get to participate in the weekly community meetings and engage in other activities that help them pursue a recovery pathway. McShin launched a Pregnant and Parenting recovery home called “Destiny’s House” in 2023 – this is the first house in the state to offer safe halfway housing for mothers who are expecting or have young children.

McShin Foundation‘s 28-day recovery program provides participants with safe recovery and halfway housing and full days of recovery education. There are relapse prevention groups and individualized recovery coaching. The center has a broad network of partnerships to clinical services, which they work with to provide medical detox, addiction psychiatry, and individual therapy to their clients. Participants engage in outings, museum visits, sporting events, art groups, rock climbing, and water rafting.

Founded in 2004, Mcshin Foundation has gathered numerous resources for addiction recovery. They offer a social model recovery program that is highly focused on peer-to-peer recovery support. The center uses peer support facilitators who have recovered from diverse addictions and thereby understand the challenges of addiction recovery. These sessions focus on understanding, exploration, and creating together through shared power and responsibility. The first thirty days of the program are the most critical in setting the foundation for recovery.

The peer support facilitators give real-life examples of their personal recovery journeys to cultivate in participants a genuine desire to pursue recovery. They create an atmosphere of authenticity through peer-oriented guidance so that participants get an understanding of the daily requirements they will have to fulfill for their recovery. The center encourages participants to stay longer in the peer-oriented care system to boost their chances of a full recovery.

A quote from the center’s website states this about their journey, “Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church opened their doors to McShin, offering office space when no one else was receptive to the idea of a recovery organization. From two offices in the basement of a church, McShin has grown into the organization it is today, including a 15,000 square foot recovery center and over 100 recovery residence beds in Richmond and the surrounding areas. Both in long-term recovery themselves, the founders, John and Carol continue working daily to combat Substance Use Disorders and help people start their recovery journey.”
