Central Asian Security and Cooperation Forum: Kazakhstan establishes authoritative platform on Asian security and development
Kazakhstan, 10th Jul 2023, King NewsWire – On July 13-14, the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies think tank with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan will hold the first Central Asian Security and Cooperation Forum in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
The world is experiencing complex geopolitical shifts. In the context of growing globalization, new formats of regionalization are being strengthened in parallel. This creates increased competition for establishing new rules and mechanisms of international relations, including security architecture.
In addition, Asia is becoming a key centre of political and geo-economic processes in this context. Many experts predict that the 21st century will be the century of Asia. More than half of the world’s population lives in Asia, while 21 of the 30 largest cities in the world are located in the region. Asia is on track to top 50 percent of global GDP by 2040 and drive 40 percent of the world’s consumption, representing a real shift in the world’s centre of gravity.
That is why the theme of the upcoming forum in Astana will be “Asia in the Changing World: Agenda for the Future”. The event will be attended by established experts and politicians from more than 25 countries, including Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office, Terhi Hakala, EU Special Representative for Central Asia, Narushige Michishita, Vice President of the National Graduate Institute of Policy Studies of Japan, Mohammad Hassan Sheikh Al Islami, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, President of the Institute of Political and International Studies of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Mehran Kamrava, Professor of Public Policy at Georgetown University in Qatar, Head of Iranian Studies Unit at the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, among many others.
The forum is intended to become the leading domestic platform to outline Kazakhstan’s most important foreign policy initiatives with the participation of influential global thinkers, experts, and academics from the world’s leading think tanks.
The Central Asian Security and Development Forum will become a fundamentally new format for dialogue and engagement between prominent thinkers and politicians to discuss the most pressing topics in security and cooperation in Asia. It will cover regionalisation of Central Asia, Asia’s security, the future of institutions, new norms, values, and principles of cooperation in Asia, the role of Kazakhstan in the changing world, among many other key topics.
Writing in Modern Diplomacy, Roman Vassilenko, Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, said: “The importance of establishing new relevant dialogue platforms at a time of global upheaval cannot be understated. As such, the Central Asian Security and Cooperation Forum will enhance regional relations involving governments and the competent expert community, which will ensure that our part of the world can grasp the opportunities in front of us.”
This forum will become an essential addition to the most authoritative annual events, such as the Munich Security Conference, IISS-Shangri La Dialogue, and the Raisina Dialogue. It will contribute to a better understanding of the current trends related to the challenges and opportunities in Asia. The discussions during the panel sessions will also lead to proposals on how to mitigate potential risks to global and regional security.
